If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to bring your child to the theater for the first time, Walton Arts Center’s presentation of The Nutcracker could be the perfect fit! The Nutcracker is a timeless family tradition, with a fanciful story, a memorable score, and a stunning ballet performance by Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
The story is one that has spanned generations. It’s the night before Christmas and all through Clara’s house, everything and everyone is stirring, even the mice! That evening, Clara is given a marvelous gift – a dashing nutcracker. Clara falls asleep with her new toy under the Christmas tree and awakens to a startling scene – the house, the toys, and the tree all seem to be getting larger! Out of nowhere, large mice dressed in army uniforms led by their Mouse King begin to circle the room. Clara’s nutcracker must defeat the Mouse King! After his victory, the nutcracker is transformed into a human prince, who whisks Clara off to the Land of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy throws them a lavish festival. Clara wakes up the next morning under the Christmas tree with her toy nutcracker still in her arms. Was it all just a dream? Or was it the magic of Christmas coming to life?
Parents and children alike will recognize Tchaikovsky’s iconic score The Nutcracker Suite, which includes the “Waltz of the Flowers,” “March,” “Trepak: Russian Dance,” “Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy” and more.
This unforgettable presentation of The Nutcracker is performed by Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet - which holds the double distinction of being Canada’s premier ballet company and one of the oldest ballet companies in North America.
